Where Does the Steam Go in My New Downdraft Hob?

-It’s not magic – just clever filters, or you can duct it outside!

What is a downdraft or venting hob?

At Wharf Design, we’re fans of downdraft hobs, which are a great way to keep your kitchen fresh while you cook. But what are they exactly? They’re ceramic, induction, or gas hobs with a built-in extractor fan that pulls steam, smoke, and grease directly from your pots and pans. This means no more lingering smells or grease spreading around the room—everything gets filtered and removed right at the source.

The best part? Since the extractor is built into the hob, you won’t need an overhead one, freeing up space and making your kitchen feel more open and airy. Perfect for anyone who loves both style and practicality in their cooking space.

How do they work?

Venting hobs, or downdraft hobs, come with built-in extractor fans either in the centre or on the sides of the cooktop. The airflow is strong enough to capture vapours before they can rise, quickly drawing them away.
In vented models, the air is directed outside through ducting, while recirculating models filter the air and release it into the space behind the base units. It’s an efficient way to keep your kitchen smelling fresh without needing an overhead extractor.

Benefits of downdraft hobs

One of the best things about downdraft hobs is the freedom they give you when it comes to design. Unlike traditional overhead extractors, you can install them just about anywhere—whether it’s in front of a window or on a kitchen island, making them a popular choice for open-plan spaces, as they help create that bright, airy feel.

They’re also a great option for smaller kitchens—offering a sleek, minimal design that gives the illusion of more space. While you’ll need a little room below for the motor, most are compact enough to still allow for plenty of storage.

Kitchen islands are becoming a central feature in many homes, serving multiple purposes. Installing a venting hob in your island keeps the space feeling open, with no need for a bulky overhead extractor. Plus, they’re much quieter, so you can chat around the breakfast bar without the usual kitchen noise getting in the way!

Maintenance

Maintaining a hob with a downdraft extractor is simple. No more time wasted climbing to clean your overhead extractor. Venting hobs come with grease filters that can be removed easily and cleaned either by hand or in a dishwasher.

Say goodbye to lingering smells

With a venting hob, steam is pulled away right at cooking level, which means fewer lingering smells and less condensation fogging up the room. The result? Fresh, clean air throughout the kitchen.
